Seniors on the Move

Seniors on the Move provides a circle of friends and fellowship for those who are 55 and over.  We meet for lunch at noon on the first Friday of each month in Memorial Hall at First United Methodist Church.

At each meeting we spend time determining the needs and interests of the group, in prayer, and in fellowship.  We encourage all seniors to participate in activities that foster spiritual growth, good health habits, outreach, and wholesome fellowship.  At some meetings we have educational programs or special music, and we plan as a group for Seniors on the Move activities.

Each month we try to take a church bus trip or meet for dinner and special programs available locally.  Through the church newsletter and website, we keep everyone informed about upcoming events and extend an open invitation to all seniors to join us.

With generous donations from members of the group, this year we were able

to redecorate the women’s bathroom in the church’s office wing, for which we have received numerous expressions of thanks from both office staff and church members.  Other activities during the past year include the following:

  1. Dinner at a local restaurant and the play Annie at the Smoky Mountain Center for the Performing Arts
  2. North Carolina Symphony’s Holiday Pops Tour at Western Carolina University
  3. Shopping and lunch at the Sweet Onion in Waynesville
  4. Premiere showing of the movie Wesley at WCU
  5. Mal and Mae Marsh’s anniversary celebration at Rib Country in Hayesville.
  6. Dinner and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the SMCPA
  7. Southern Hospitality at the Peacock Playhouse and dinner in Hayesville
  8. Potluck picnic and sing-along at Standing Indian Campground
  9. Trolley tour of Asheville, North Carolina, and a barbeque lunch
  10. Cherohala Skyway Leaf Season Trip with lunch in Tellico Plains

In November the group will meet for dinner and the play Jekyll and Hyde at the SMCPA.  To celebrate the holiday season in December, we will be attending the Western Carolina Community Chorus’s Christmas concert Voices and Brass at WCU.  At our November meeting we will begin planning for the year 2011.

As we look forward to the coming year, we hope to increase our membership and to encourage everyone to take advantage of the many programs and opportunities for ministry that are available at First United Methodist church.
