Share & Serve Garden

Our mission…

The Share & Serve Garden seeks to gather people who want to serve God and the Macon County community; tend and nurture plants as well as relationships with each other and those served; and deliver to CareNet a maximum harvest from June through October.

The Share & Serve Garden began in 2013 with a small group of folks and a large desire to meet a need in Macon County.

The group established a small garden adjacent to the First United Methodist Outreach Center in downtown Franklin and began making plans to nurture a garden and harvest the entire yield for CareNet of Macon County.

By the third year of operation, a second garden space was secured, volunteers increased, larger grants were obtained, raised beds were built, crop organization was streamlined and a bountiful harvest was reached for CareNet’s clients in need.

By God’s grace and through grants received from The Duke Endowment, Franklin First United Methodist Church and individuals, the Share & Serve Garden has plans already underway to strengthen its connections to the clients served by CareNet.

A main goal is to convey to clients the benefits of sustainable, small urban gardens and show them how to make this happen through workshops and client partnerships. We aim to continually inspire others to join in this community service and to educate CareNet clients in growing, canning and cooking the vegetables grown.

With volunteers cultivating garden space year-round, the Share & Serve Garden donates weekly to area food pantries.

Planting begins each March with a “Seed Planting Workshop” and “Seed Adoption Program” so that plants can begin the growing cycle indoors until May. Seedlings are then transferred to each garden and with plenty of sunshine, water and tending, crops are ready for a long growing season.

Our main crops are green beans, tomatoes, corn and sweet potatoes – all harvested from July to October. Smaller crop varieties include broccoli, cabbage, spinach, cucumbers and squash.
