February is Famine Month for our Youth as we focus on hunger awareness and doing things to help those in need. Each Sunday night at Youth Group we will be looking at some of the issues related to hunger and how we can help. We will also be pairing up with several other Franklin United Methodist Churches as we make plans for our upcoming 30 Hour Famine!

SUNDAY (Feb. 6) - it's Souper Bowl Sunday! As part of a nationwide focus on hunger, the youth will collect money in soup pots after each of our worship services. The money will go to help the hungry through CareNet here in Macon County. Each person is asked to drop at least $1 in the soup pots as we remember those who don’t have enough to eat on the day that millions are eating in abundance as they watch the Super Bowl on TV.

FRIDAY (Feb. 11) – as a part of our collecting funds to help the hungry through the 30 Hour Famine, the youth will be offering a night of babysitting for families with young children. Parents can bring their children to the church anytime during the hours of 5:30 and 8:15 and know that their children will be well cared for and have lots of fun while parents can celebrate Valentine’s Day with dinner out. Donations made for this service will go directly to help those who are hungry.

CONFIRMATION OPPORTUNITY - Have you been confirmed (made a profession of faith in Jesus Christ and joined the Church)? - if not, then you are invited to be a part of our upcoming confirmation class. It will take place on Sunday mornings in Feb. and March during the Sunday School hour. This is open to any youth in grades 6-12, and will be led by Margaret Freeman. The first session will take place on Feb. 6 at 9:45 am in the "old Fellowship Hall" on the ground floor.

YOUTH HANDBELLS – if haven’t joined our new youth handbell group and would like to, please contact Linda Sterrett. The group is practicing most Sundays before youth group! Make sure you have our upcoming 30 Hour Famine on your calendar - Feb. 25 - 26, with the youth leading worship at both services on Sunday, Feb. 27. You'll receive registration info and hearing much more about the Famine over the next few weeks. Lots of adults are needed to help make this happen! Please let Margaret know if you can help, or be sure to sign up on the registration lists that will be posted in Memorial Hall. Because of the possibility of bad weather - any time something has to be cancelled, it will be put on the church's website and our youth Facebook page. Or you can always call me either on my cell (706-714-2242) or at home (369-5200). We'll be watching the skies during these winter months!

Famine Update

Famine: an extreme scarcity of food

The 30 Hour Famine, as the title suggests, is a fast lasting 30 hours. From noon (or after lunch) on Friday the 25th, to 6:00 pm Saturday the 26th. During this time period we will be focusing on hunger; what it is, where it is, and what it feels like.

Hunger: a craving or urgent need for food or a specific nutrient

The Famine includes activities such as:
- Cardboard houses (Jr. High)
- Hide-and-seek in the dark (Sr. High)
- Prayer Walk
- Praise Band
- Collecting canned food for CareNet
- A "feast" breaking the fast
- Collection for World Vision (Youth)

The Famine IS an over-night event. Therefore, you will need a sleeping bag, clothes, and tolietries. To help you deal with the hunger, it is wise to bring gum and non-citrus juices.

The Famine is a great way to help out your community while becoming closer to God and your fellow peers! You DO make a difference!
